Lanikai Pillbox (Ka’iwa Ridge) is one of the most popular hikes on the island and is known for its beautiful views. Even for a short hike up the mountain, students were able to learn about taking care of the land they are visiting.
Lanikai Pillbox hike, while not a very difficult hike, has become eroded in certain areas over the years. Visitors (like our students) should read the signs carefully and stay on the paths marked by previous foot traffic to be safe. This will also not harm any other parts of the trail or themselves.
At the top, our students enjoyed the iconic view from one of the old military bunkers (also known as pillboxes) looking toward the Mokulua islets. One of our students asked if it was possible to go to the islets and were given the information that they are restricted and protected areas that are a part of the Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary and home for various Hawaiian animals, particularly the ‘Ua’u Kani (the Hawaiian wedge-tailed shearwater).
Friday Sunset Picnic
Whether you are celebrating your final week in Hawaii with a bang with Waikiki’s Friday fireworks or you just want to relax and hangout with great people, Global Village Hawaii’s students love sunset picnics. This time we added volleyball to the sunset and fireworks viewing to spark a little friendly competition.
